A Submarine in Space

This tale begins one dark and stormy morning at the Gdańsk Shipyards, Poland. Three people enter the watchmen’s office intent on claiming their prize. Their spokesman announces, “We’re here to collect the hulk of #452.”

Originally designated Project 613 (NATO Whiskey), the Polish Submarine ORP Orzeł (292), was based a German Type X modified design. The purchasing cartel paid an obscene amount of gold to remove the weapon systems and reseal the hull. Minutes later the 1,110 ton, 275ft long, 22 feet wide hulk of #452 is lofted from its cradle in dry dock #7 and was lofted into the darkened heavens as if it were no more than a feather. This introduction is meant to prepare you for the following adventures and to consider Why this hulk was purchased in the first place, where did the gold that made the purchase come from and how hulk lifted. These and other questions will come to you as you read. Moving on to the man section to join the central character.

James Hanson is a broke, discouraged, grad student struggling to complete a PhD in planetary science at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. It is on the very eve of his departure on and wend his way homeward to Davenport Iowa. Jim’s a good student but hasn’t yet attracted the attention of any individual or organization willing to underwrite his program.

A discussion with his PhD Supervisor did little to console him. The Professor smiles sadly, “I Don’t wish to dash your hopes Jim, but competition for a billet on the Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) is unrealistic. You’d be competing for a limited number of berths against seasoned NASA astronauts and tenured professors already working in the field and you haven’t even finalized your thesis proposal.” Chagrined and chastened, Jim departs for home to consider his options.

Jim was working as substitute manager at the Bolero bowling lane, when an old high school chum calls inviting him to inspect a piece of space junk that has just fallen on his property.  At the fall site, Jim quickly deduces this is no meteorite but wrought of crafted metal.

When Bob offers to haul it off his property after it has cooled, Jim suggests the alley behind the Bolero. There, Jim quickly discovers the fall is no piece of scrap but an intelligent organometallic shape shifter he names Morph!

Morph is a fast learner; In the alley behind the Bolero; Morph quickly masters enough English to teach Jim how to tow his 500-pound body behind his ancient Ugo through the darkened streets of Davenport Iowa to his parent’s home. Two days later Morph has mastered written English, accessed the internet, learns about biological life, human life and what mankind now knows of scientific concepts. Jim also learns many things about Morph.  Morph struggles with concepts like wealth and mediums of exchange … he learns Gold is a favored medium.

When Morph learns about Jim’s current financial embarrassment, he suggests he obtains Gold. Jim explains that Gold is a difficult commodity to barter; it usually belongs to someone else and is stored in secure places. This brings up subjects like ethics, morality, theft, and punishment. Then Jim has another thought. “Hordes of gold, silver, and precious gems have been lost in the oceans of this world, he regales Morph with fabulous tales of lost treasures of the sea.

Morph then asks the poignantquestion that could change Jim’s life and those of many: “If you had sufficient gold and Silver, could you exchange it to complete your education?”

Jim answers, “Enough to do pretty much anything, anyone would ever want.”

Morph and Jim pour over suspected treasure locations. Two days later as Jim returns from work he finds stacks of gold bars and coins drying near the basement furnace. Two days later Jim stores this new-found windfall in a bank vault … two days after that federal marshals appear, impounded the trove presenting him with a summons to appear in the Tampa Southern Federal District Court for a hearing to discuss the find and disposition of said treasure. At that hearing Jim faces the stark world of treasure salvoring; a legal mine field of levies, claims, counter claims made by discoverers, former property owners, and conflicting government claims of territorial rights.

Jim is told to “lawyer up” after discussing the case with Attorney Francis Howe’s law firm, he still faces the question he couldn’t answer in court: How he found the treasure …

With all legal  remedies denied, Jim resolves to try another way.

Jim’s search for another way ends when he finds a pair of women crewing a small charter business on dives in shallow waters off Key West. This vessel is called Ihe Double-Down. It’s rumored these women dive for treasure in their spare time. By the close of Book I, Jim, Monica, Pamela, and Morph have managed to form an odd partnership to salvage treasure in a somewhat quasilegal way.

In Part II you’ll share the many Caribbean exploits and misadventures of Jim, Monica, Pamela and Morph on their dives, and their run-ins with various unsavory Columbian underworld groups and the ultimate fate of these four stalwart adventurers.

Invasion Shemya Island

CONDUCTOR TEASE

Shemya Island is a dot of land located at the end of the Aleutian Island archipelago. According to Major General Claxon, humanity’s future, and all present life on Earth rests on the initial outcome of an encounter with this life form’s first appearance on this 2.73 miles wide, 4.32 miles long scrap of land located some 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska.

Claxon says this at the beginning of a briefing conducted just prior to his intercept team’s departure for Shemya. The entity is named Progenitor. The previous night this mutated life form has struck again, killing the office scheduled to present this briefing. The woman who helped prepare the briefing materials has now been pressed into service as a briefer and who now must join the team.

Their stated mission: To search and identify Progenitor. The problem: The Progenitor is a shape shifter not only capable of morphing its form, but able to duplicate it’s victim’s most deadly defensive and attack characteristics. No one knows the original shape it took on its first appearance. By going there, the General and his team hope to find and identify the creature who is destroying and replacing all other forms of life and defeat it early in its earliest stage of its development when it is apt to be in its most vulnerable form.

Shemya is populated by 2,000 men. In the early 1960’s no women were assigned to the island.

General Claxon’s first encounter with Shemya Island’s Skeptical Base Commander, U.S. Air Force Colonel Stark. Stark was responsible for several highly secret intelligence units. He and his men are tasked to gather information on the clandestine activities of the Soviet Union and other potential enemies.

In a closed meeting with Stark, Claxon confides he and his has traveled through time itself to confront Progenitor and declares his mission priority supersedes the daily missions the Colonel presides over at Shemya. Claxon and his team have come to prevent something he calls the End Event. The proof, he says is resting on the tarmac of the runway in front of the Shemya Base Operations building; he invites Stark to tour his craft.

Colonel Stark, an experienced Air Force pilot, accepts the invitation, and is stunned by what he sees aboard the craft. Claxon allows Stark to sit in the pilot’s seat, familiarizes him with the ship’s controls and allows him to fly the craft through a series of simulated training maneuvers. The experience leaves Stark with no doubt these visitors are who they say they are. General Claxon identifies the date of the Progenitor’s expected arrival, asks for Stark’s support and proposes how base personnel can assist Claxon’s crew without compromising the Island’s current mission.

Together they prepare for Observation Day #1. What follows is a series of surprises and twists in an unanticipated 3-way struggle for control of mankind’s future left for the reader to discover.

Masada Calls

Vatican mystic Monsignor Thomas Steele is the director of the Paranormal Section of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy because of his special spiritual connection to a 16th century nun named Esméralda. Gato, Steele’s pet cat, also plays its special part in this union … Gato is Esméralda’s physical connection with this world … her sense of taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing.
The Monsignor is studying manuscripts in his office within the archives of Vatican City, when the silence is broken by the raised voices of two arguing women. One is his assistant, Sister Donna Giovanini … the other is an apparently dowdy drunk who has somehow managed to stagger through security checks to his office. This highlander dressed in a rumpled tartan business suit is none other than Flora Campbell and she’s about to launch the Monsignor on his next paranormal adventure.
This Glasgow University professor has used modern technology to restore an ancient parchment unearthed from a private library buried in the volcanic ash of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. This parchment was written by Joseph Ben Matthias a famous first-century Jewish priest, soldier, and scholar. His other literary works provided crucial documentation of first century A.D. Roman Palestine. But this newly discovered parchment hints at the existence of a second scroll (now lost) and a fabulous trove of ancient Hebrew temple artifacts hidden somewhere in the depths of the Masada Plateau.
Steele is skeptical at first, but a chain of clues emerge that conclude with a visit from Esméralda confirming Joseph Ben Matthias’ lost scroll not only exists but lies misfiled somewhere within the Vatican archives itself. When Esméralda and Gato find the second scroll, the last of Steele’s reservations evaporate. After briefing the Pontiff on his findings and receiving his blessing, Monsignor Steele recruits old comrades from previous adventures and equips Team Masada for a subterranean search for antiquities. Together they face challenges, including a brimstone portal called Sabbath Crossing, golems, sacred soldiers, witness a skirmish between good and evil and the might of the Chavilahan empire.

THOMAS STEELE AND THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM

Father Thomas Steele was putting the final touches to his speech before the Pontifical Swiss Guard regiment on medieval combat tactics, when Sister Donna Giovanini interrupted to say Father Ricci, Cardinal Roncalli’s assistant was on the phone and needed to see him immediately.
Minutes later Fr Ricci staggered into the office with a crate of ancient relics. One would touch off Steele’s next adventure.

It wasn’t a clock or a time piece. The startled Monsignor had only seen one before, and that was copy. This was an original tool used to predict celestial movements of the Sun, Earth’s Moon and the five known planets known to exist at the time. They called this an Antikythera mechanism named for the island off which the original was salvaged from a sunken ship. This was taken from a plundered roman nobleman’s Tomb.

At noon the next day he, Gato, Brother Pendragon and a survey team left for the ancient city of Venosa in southern Italy to explore the find, speak with the local Priest and Georgio Accardi grounds supervisor for the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity, and the ruins of an ancient amphitheater who showed them the partially plundered memorial of Roman General Marcus Claudius Marcellus, who’d faced Hannibal in battle.
Steele didn’t need Esmeralda or Gato to tell him other things had been taken from the tomb. While Pendragon was arranging for the survey teams arrival, He demonstrated his paranormal powers discovering a hidden compartment in the back of the tomb. Steele began questioning nervous Georgio before giving him two options: Confess what he had taken and return them, or face prosecution for the theft. Steele pointed out that as a Catholic his confession was protected by the sanctity of the confessional. Georgio agreed but admitted his brother was also involved in the theft. Steele replied he could nothing for the other unless he made the same agreement.

After Pendragon’s return Steele made 2 discoveries in the smaller room; the first was a transposition cipher (scytale) used to send messages on the battlefield, the second was a simple wooden crucifix. Both presented mysteries: The 1700-year-old scytale was still sealed and designed to destroy the message within, if improperly opened, but the crucifix … General had died in 208 B.C., over 200 years before the birth of Christ and Christianity … how had it come to be in a double sealed tomb? They found a 3rd object they could not identify till later.

Weeks later a fan named Francesco Accardi the supposed brother of of Georgio appears; he wishes to confess as well, but it seems there is a slight complication. He isn’t Georgio’s brother. Francesco Accardi claims to be Judas Iscariot, Christ’s betrayer.
The rest of the book concerns opening the scytale, reading and reacting to the message, the origin of the cross but you’ll have to buy the book for that.

C.R.I.S.P.R. PLAGUE

So what’s a C.R.I.S.P.R.? Krista Everett was a seismologist by profession. She didn’t know what a C.R.I.S.P.R. was either, not until she discovered her husband’s journal hidden in the Ixtapa, Mexico hotel room safe. C.R.I.S.P.R. stands for Clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats. Okay … not helpful.  It’s a researcher designed genetic splicing engine made by coupling a length of bacterial RNA to a viral enzyme. It precisely snips and replaces nearly any DNA segment. Better?

The story begins two weeks ago when her husband Russell came home from work with news of a new assignment and a proposition: Take a long overdue, all expenses paid vacation in Ixtapa, Mexico while he consults on a special project aboard the research ship Phoenix that has put into port at the Ixtapa Marina That was the story then …

Shortly after arriving Krista meets Henri, hotel falconer and his falcon Voltan, they’re paid to keep the hotel campus clear of nuisance birds. He and Voltan will soon play a crucial role as the saga unfolds.

From Russ’s secret journal Krista learns Russ was really here to stop a mutated C.R.I.S.P.R. epidemic that escaped containment and was spreading among the Phoenix staff and crew.  It implicates him with a rogue research group unencumbered by ethics and unimpeded by governmental oversight. Its disregard for standard protocol threatens all life on Earth as we know it.

Even as she reads the journal, the forces of nature are conspiring to vastly worsen the problem. While Russ was at the Marina, a massive earthquake shakes Ixtapa to its foundations. As a trained seismologist Krista knows what’s coming and tries to warn hotel staff and guests but to no avail.  She meets Henri on the beach and race to the higher ground safety of her fifth floor hotel room just in time to watch a massive 60 foot tsunami swamp the Ixtapa coast.

The cell towers on the hills above Ixtapa are still intact and Krista contacts her Brother Andre, CEO of a medical equipment company and her Sister Yvette, a Pentagon Air Force flight nurse to tell them what’s happened and that her husband Russ is missing. Each has the ways and means to visit the devastated region and help their sister.

While Krista is helping in the local relief efforts she finds Russell’s diary. She doesn’t know the chief architect of the secret research effort, Dr. Dennis Walsh, has arrived aboard the Phoenix’s sister ship Phoenix II. or that the project’s chief financial backer, drug lord Ricardo Salvador has arrived on his ship, Patron.  Neither are here to join in the rescue effort. They’ve come in search of Batch 357 containing the seeds of contagion and the keys to cure every disease of the human condition … including death itself.

Andre and Yvette arrive in Ixtapa, find their sister and learn of the contagion. They find the tsunami has swept the Phoenix inland. With Henri and Voltan as guides, Krista, Yvette and Andre trudge through the tortured landscape to the wreck and discover they are not alone. Scientists and underworld investors are also converging to find B-357 samples and destroy evidence of their criminal involvement. They also encounter victims of the C.R.I.S.P.R. plague at the wreck site, including Krista’s husband transformed into another entity.  He and other mutated survivors join the fight to defeat of the unscrupulous developers and backers of B-357 and a cure to the C.R.I.S.P.R. plague.

He tells the Pope of Ahriman’s offer to join forces with the Church against Tumkak and the unaligned. The Pope warns a fallen angel cannot be trusted; “They are masters of deceit.”

To aid in Steele’s assignment the Pope loans the Monsignor two items archived in the Vatican Apostolic Library that belonged to King David. Vault caretaker Brother Pendragon tells of their origin then gives Steele the legendary lyre David played to sooth King Saul and Goliath’s sword, reforged as Caesar’s legendary Crocea Mores, but he can offer no clues as to their use.

Ahriman appears to Steele in another vision, repeats his offer of aid and hints at a solution. When Steele again refuses, a petit woman dressed in the habit of a medieval nun appears. Esméralda has come to tell Father Steel the real reason why Tumkak and his kindred have come to Earth and what he must do next.

Creatures of Habit

thumbnailWe join unconventional Vatican mystic Monsignor Thomas Steele of the Vatican’s paranormal section on his first adventure, an entrant in the punishing Dakar endurance rally. Steele thunders through the Atacama Desert, Chile, driest spot on Earth on his BMW racing bike when he’s ordered to visit the Handmaidens of Christ the Healer Convent, a fortress like refuge for sisters suffering from psychiatric disorders.

On arriving, Steele learns the reason for his call: Residents behind these cloistered walls are being attacked and found pregnant … but how? Most are beyond child bearing age. Steele receives polite but grudging support from local clergy, when he raises the possibility that the menace may be temporal, not spiritual.

From a local Mapuche Indian and convent handyman, Steele learns the convent was built on the bones of an old Spanish fort which in turn was erected upon the ruins of an ancient Incan citadel. He regales the Monsignor with legends of the Chonchon, a race of night creatures who were here when his ancestors arrived 12,000 years ago.

With Esmeralda (Izzy) his 16th century spiritual guide and a feral cat named Gato, Steele moves from adventure to adventure seeking to discover the true nature of the threat. As he does, we learn more about this complicated man of action, his murky past and his bitter-sweet love, lost but not forgotten.

Cemetery World

Cemetery World thuymbnailTomboy daughter from a family of 7 sons, Yvette Mischeau graduates first in her class from the Space Maritime Academy earning her pick of available assignments. When an anticipated commission in the Federal Space Navy is denied, she applies for a maritime billet read that reads like a travel brochure. It promises a first mate’s billet on a ship with the capacity to carry “1500 souls”. Trusting Mischeau arrives at Port Golgotha on Planet New Elysium in the Revelations System to find her posting is not to a cruise ship as she’d supposed but to the space tug Azrael. The 1500 “souls” mentioned in the posting aren’t vacationers but corpses! Mischeau has unwittingly joined Project Lazarus and New Elysium’s funerary fleet, in the midst of disinterring the dead from the cemeteries of New Elysium and reinterring them on New Elysium’s barren second moon, Necropolis. New Elysium is a water world with a 2% surface land mass and is running out of living space. The governing religious theocracy, the Jarl, observe strict covenants governing the preservation of life and veneration of the dead. To complicate matters there is a jurisdictional dispute over New Elysium’s second moon.
More surprises follow: Azrael’s master, ageing Captain Flynt, assigns the rooky ensign to a Gaelic speaking ship’s computer MacTavish, named for the Azrael’s first master and Flynt’s grandfather. As the Azrael prepares for her next Golgotha-Necropolis run, two tardy clerics arrive: Priest (Exemplar) Eleazar Steele and his assistant, Acolyte, Ira Cross. Their mission is to sanctify the reburial of the dead but their secret mission is to refute accounts of risen dead roaming the airless moon. On arrival the clerics discover the sacred tombs have been plundered. The Azrael’s crew and passenger are taken captive by grave robbers. It gradually becomes apparent they are not the only inhabitants of this catacombed underworld. Tomb robbers and Azrael’s crew alike are soon fighting for survival against an implacable enemy they cannot hope to understand.
